About The Claudia Booker Scholarship

In honor of the five-year anniversary of the passing of our beloved midwife elder and activist, we pause to remember a powerful voice for midwives, birthing rights, and community care.
Midwifery, midwives, and the right to choose with whom, how, and where to give birth have long been protected by guardians of birth. Throughout time, individuals like Claudia have stood at the forefront—using their voices to advocate for midwives, communities, and midwifery organizations.
With a deep sense of commitment to our students and to the state of Florida—home to the headquarters of Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery— the Delaware, Maryland, Virginia state area— Claudia Booker’s home area— and Puerto Rico, we have created this scholarship in her honor. May it continue the work she championed and support the future of midwifery.

This scholarship was established to support our vision of a maternity care climate saturated with culturally sensitive and racially congruent care that results in equitable and superior outcomes in maternal and infant health for all populations by removing financial barriers for students that currently reside in our founding state of Florida, as well as Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Puerto Rico who aspire to become midwives.

Claudia Booker, a beloved midwife, doula, and lifelong advocate for mothers and babies, was born and raised in Washington, DC. Her remarkable journey began with a B.A. in Sociology and an M.Ed. from the University of Hartford, followed by a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law. Before turning to birth work, she led a distinguished legal career, including serving as a DC Contract Appeals Board Judge, Assistant Corporation Counsel, and Chief Contracting Officer for major city agencies. She also served in President Jimmy Carter’s advance team.

Claudia later answered a deeper calling—training in midwifery at several institutions, including The Farm Midwifery Center with Ina May Gaskin, and apprenticing across the U.S. and in Senegal. She became a Certified Professional Midwife in 2011, licensed in both Virginia and Maryland.

Through her Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services practice, Claudia supported hundreds of families with wisdom, compassion, and care. She volunteered internationally, offering advanced midwifery care in Bali and in the Philippines after Typhoon Yolanda. Her commitment to equity was unwavering—she co-founded the Grand Challenge project to uplift African-American birth workers and served over a decade on DC’s Infant Mortality Review Committee.
