Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery

Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery was designed to enable students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become highly competent midwives. We place an emphasis on teaching the art of out-of-hospital birth, differentiating between low-risk and high-risk pregnancies and preparing students to organize and operate as a professional midwife.

The great news is we are currently accepting applications for our cohort starting in January 2022.

The Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery (CCSM) mission is to provide quality, practical, and culturally sensitive midwifery training and education, that will prepare midwives of caliber who can represent themselves and their profession in any arena. We aim to inspire our students to become perinatal leaders in the maternal child health field, willing to provide access to respectful maternity care for all communities with an emphasis on eliminating health disparities  through the education and empowerment of women and families so that they can once again safely experience ‘their birth, their way’.

Vision Statement

We envision a maternity care climate saturated with culturally sensitive and racially congruent care that results in equitable and superior outcomes in maternal and infant health for all populations.

We seek to reach as many as we can because there is no time to lose. We are in the business of saving lives. In order to achieve our vision we seek to open a pathway for midwives of color to again become autonomous community providers, to address and redress the historical, structural and institutional inequities that continue to decimate Black and indigenous people, and to restore trusted birth workers to the heart of their communities once again.

CCSM is proud to offer 3 programs to meet the needs of aspiring midwives.

Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery

The Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery program is designed to meet the educational needs of the student  who enrols with no prior midwifery or nursing education and requires the completion of our Midwifery Core Curriculum. This program provides students with the academic and clinical learning experiences through 90 credits spanning three years.

Hybrid Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery

The Hybrid Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery program follows the same Midwifery Core Curriculum as our standard Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery program but is adapted to suit the needs of aspiring midwives across the nation. Our hybrid students will attend their academic course virtual, clinical lab course on campus during once a trimester workshops, and participate in a clinical externship in their local setting.

Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement

The Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement Program is designed to prepare experienced foreign-trained midwives or doctors, or registered or licensed midwives from other states for careers as Florida Licensed Midwives. The program focuses on the art of out-of-hospital birth, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a safe, independent practitioner. Course work is both academic and clinical, with a strong emphasis on the laws and rules that govern practice as a Florida Licensed Midwife. The Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement curriculum consists of 24 credits over a minimum of four months.

Student Life

CCSM strongly encourages student midwives to feel connected within the student body. With this in mind, CCSM has implemented the following (and more) in order to foster a sense of community within and around our school:

  • Opportunities for extracurricular workshops for faculty, staff, preceptors and students.
  • Appointment of a student body representative to promote harmonious student, faculty, and community relationships and to provide direct channels of communication between the student body and CCSM’s administration
  • Participation in midwifery service projects.
  • An annual social event  for faculty, staff, advisory board and students to come together and share.

In addition to the above, we encourage students to organize activities amongst themselves and in their community to further bonding and strengthen connections. This includes study groups, literature review clubs and holiday parties.
