This school was designed to enable students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become highly competent midwives. We place an emphasis on teaching the art of out-of-hospital birth, differentiating between low-risk and high-risk pregnancies while preparing students to organize and operate as a professional midwife.

The mission of Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery (CCSM) is to provide quality, practical midwifery training that prepares graduates who can represent themselves and their profession with confidence, anywhere they practice.
We aim to develop perinatal leaders in maternal-child health who are ready to serve every community, with particular attention to the communities that have been underserved the longest. Our graduates are prepared to help families once again safely experience “their birth, their way.”
OUR VISION
We envision a maternity care landscape where every family has access to a midwife who understands them and serves them well, and where that access leads to better outcomes for everyone, regardless of background.
There is no time to lose. Historically, midwives, and Black midwives in particular, were pushed out of the communities and homes they had safely served for generations.
Our vision is to help rebuild that pathway – training a new generation of highly skilled community midwives, so that trusted birth workers can return to the heart of the communities that need them most.

Direct-Entry Midwifery Program
Our midwifery training program is adapted to suit the needs of aspiring midwives from across the nation. Distance learning students attend weekly academic courses virtually, complete clinical lab courses on campus during in-person skills weeks, and complete a clinical externship in their local community over the course of the program. We are licensed in Florida and California and are part of the Rhode Island CPM Equity Initiative.

We prepare our students to work confidently and respectfully with people from every background, because that breadth of experience is what makes a midwife ready for real community practice. CCSM does not discriminate and welcomes people from every background without exception.

We are dedicated to educating midwifery students in the ancient art and modern science of midwifery practice, with the belief that any student ready to do the work can benefit from the education we offer.
We believe every person should have access to a maternity care provider of their choice, and to the information needed to make informed decisions. Our goal is to develop competent, highly educated midwives who can provide that option.
