Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery

Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery was designed to enable students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become highly competent midwives. We place an emphasis on teaching the art of out-of-hospital birth, differentiating between low-risk and high-risk pregnancies and preparing students to organize and operate as a professional midwife.

Mission

The Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery (CCSM) mission is to provide quality, practical, and culturally sensitive midwifery training and education, that will prepare midwives of caliber who can represent themselves and their profession in any arena. We aim to inspire our students to become perinatal leaders in the maternal child health field, willing to provide access to maternity care for all communities and to educate and empower women and families so that they can once again safely experience ‘their birth, their way’.

Programs

CCSM is proud to offer two programs to meet the needs of aspiring midwives in Florida.

Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery

The Three-Year Direct-Entry Midwifery program is designed to meet the educational needs of the student  who enrols with no prior midwifery or nursing education and requires the completion of our Midwifery Core Curriculum. This program provides students with the academic and clinical learning experiences through 2488 clock hours over three years.

Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement

The Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement Program is designed to prepare experienced foreign-trained midwives or doctors, or registered or licensed midwives from other states for careers as Florida Licensed Midwives. The program focuses on the art of out-of-hospital birth, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a safe, independent practitioner. Course work is both academic and clinical, with a strong emphasis on the laws and rules that govern practice as a Florida Licensed Midwife. The Four-Month Licensure by Endorsement curriculum consists of 488 clock hours over four months.

Student Life

CCSM strongly encourages student midwives to feel connected within the student body. With this in mind, CCSM has implemented the following (and more) in order to foster a sense of community within and around our school:

  • Opportunities for extracurricular workshops for faculty, staff, preceptors and students.
  • Appointment of a student body representative to promote harmonious student, faculty, and community relationships and to provide direct channels of communication between the student body and CCSM’s administration
  • Participation in midwifery service projects.
  • An annual social event  for faculty, staff, advisory board and students to come together and share.

In addition to the above, we encourage students to organize activities amongst themselves and in their community to further bonding and strengthen connections. This includes study groups, literature review clubs and holiday parties.

Why Choose Us

N

Meac Acreditation

Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery has been granted pre-accreditation status by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council on August 12, 2019 through August 13, 2020.

Pre-accreditation is defined by the US Department of Education as ‘the status of public recognition that an accrediting agency grants to an institution/program for a limited period of time that signifies that the agency has determined that the institution/program is progressing towards accreditation and is likely to attain accreditation before the expiration of that limited period of time.’ MEAC pre-accreditation status is normally limited to one year and does not signify that an applicant institution/program is accredited, nor is it a guarantee of eventual accreditation.

N

Dedication to Diversity

At CSSM we promote equity, equality, diversity and inclusion consistently throughout everything we do. CCSM believes that exposure to diversity will best prepare our students to serve all women and families.  Because of our strong commitment to equity and social justice the school promotes non-discrimination in all its facets.

N

Unrivaled Educational Philosophy

We are dedicated to educating midwifery students in the ancient art and modern science of midwifery practice with the belief that any student wanting to reach their goal will be able to benefit from the education offered.

We believe that every woman should have access to a maternity care provider of their choice and to the information needed to make informed decisions. Our goal is to develop competent, highly educated midwives who can provide this option.
